How to Choose the Right Container for Your Product

The Right Container Makes All the Difference

Packaging isn't just about aesthetics — it protects your product, communicates your brand, and influences buying decisions. Choosing the right container starts with understanding exactly what your product needs.

1. Consider the Product Type

Different products have different requirements:

  • Dry goods (snacks, baked goods, spices) — need airtight seals to preserve freshness
  • Liquids and sauces — require leak-proof containers with secure lids
  • Hot food and meal prep — need heat-resistant, microwave-safe plastics like PP (Type 5)
  • Frozen products — require containers that remain stable at low temperatures without cracking

2. Match the Material to the Use

Always check the resin code on the base of the container:

  • PET (Type 1) — great for cold beverages and dry goods
  • HDPE (Type 2) — good for deli items and general food storage
  • PP (Type 5) — the go-to for hot food, microwave use, and reusable containers

For food contact, always choose food grade plastics. If heat is involved, confirm microwave-safe labelling too.

3. Think About Shelf Life

If your product needs a long shelf life, consider containers with airtight or tamper-evident seals. UV-resistant or opaque containers help preserve light-sensitive products like oils or certain supplements.

4. Factor in Presentation

Your container is part of your brand. Clear containers let the product speak for itself — great for colourful foods or artisan products. Opaque containers work well when you want the label and branding to take centre stage.

5. Plan for Practicality

  • Will customers reuse the container? If so, durability and ease of cleaning matter.
  • Does it need to stack efficiently for storage and shipping?
  • Is the lid style right — snap-on, screw-top, hinged?

Start with a Sample

Before committing to bulk quantities, always test your chosen container with your actual product. Check the seal, the fit, and how it holds up under storage and transport conditions.
